What changes the result

This is the class the density indicates. Density is one of four factors in the NMFC, alongside stowability, handling and liability, and many commodities carry a fixed class under their own NMFC item number regardless of density. Check the item with your carrier before the bill of lading goes out.

Freight class is a density answer wearing a commodity's clothes

An LTL carrier does not sell you a truck. It sells you a share of a trailer that has to be filled, unloaded and refilled several times between your dock and the consignee's, and it prices that share on how much revenue your freight blocks. A trailer has roughly 3,400 cubic feet and a legal payload of around 44,000 lb. Freight that fills the space long before it fills the weight is freight that costs the carrier a load.

The National Motor Freight Classification turns that economic fact into 18 numbers. Class 50 is the densest and cheapest, class 500 the lightest and dearest. Everything else about the system — the item numbers, the sub-provisions, the arguments with your carrier's pricing desk — hangs off a single ratio: pounds per cubic foot.

That is the calculation above. Weight divided by volume, volume measured as it leaves your dock, and the answer looked up in a bracket table. It is arithmetic a person can check, which is exactly why it is worth checking: a class assigned wrongly does not fail loudly. It goes out on the bill of lading, the shipment moves, and six weeks later a reclassification charge arrives with a photograph of your pallet on a dimensioner.

Divide by 1,728, not by 12

This is the error that ruins more freight class calculations than every other cause combined, and it is worth spelling out because it is so easy to make and so hard to spot.

Dimensions come off a tape measure in inches. Density is defined in pounds per cubic foot. Twelve inches make a foot, so the instinct is to divide by 12. But volume has three dimensions, and the conversion factor for volume is 12 × 12 × 12 = 1,728. Divide by 12 and your volume comes out 144 times too large, your density 144 times too small, and a class 70 shipment reports as class 500.

Work one through. A pallet measuring 48 × 40 × 48 inches is 92,160 cubic inches. Divided by 1,728 that is 53.33 cubic feet. Check it the other way: 48 inches is 4 feet, 40 inches is 3.33 feet, and 4 × 3.33 × 4 is 53.33 cubic feet. Same answer, because 1,728 is exactly 12 cubed. At 400 lb that pallet is 7.5 lb per cubic foot — class 125. Had you divided by 12, you would have got 7,680 cubic feet, 0.05 lb per cubic foot, and class 500.

Working in metric? A centimetre measurement converts at 2.54 per inch, which is 16.39 per cubic inch, and 1 lb per cubic foot is 16.02 kg per cubic metre. The 18 density brackets

Density maps to class in steps, not on a curve. Each bracket's lower bound belongs to the bracket: exactly 15.0 lb per cubic foot is class 70, not 77.5. Half a pound per cubic foot can move you a full class, which is why measuring accurately beats estimating generously.

The commodity examples are illustrative, not binding. They exist to give the numbers a feel: most palletised consumer goods land somewhere between class 85 and class 250, and if your answer is class 400 or 500 you are almost certainly shipping air.

Density is one of four factors, and the other three can override it

A freight class calculator that hands back a number and calls it your class is telling you a comfortable half-truth. The NMFC evaluates four transportation characteristics:

Many commodities also carry a fixed class under their own NMFC item number, with no density scale at all — the number is the number whether the box is packed tight or loose. The classification system has been progressively restructured toward density-based sub-provisions in recent years, which makes the calculation above more useful than it once was, but it does not make it authoritative. Treat the density class as your expected answer, and confirm the item number with your carrier before it goes on paperwork.

The pallet is part of the shipment

The carrier measures what comes off your dock, including whatever it is sitting on. A standard 48 × 40 inch GMA wood pallet adds about 5.5 inches of deck height and 35 to 40 lb of tare. Block and CHEP pallets run nearer 6 inches and 50 to 60 lb; a Euro pallet is 144 mm tall and about 25 kg.

Height is the part people forget, and it is the part that hurts. Freight stacked 40 inches high on a 5.5 inch pallet is measured at 45.5 inches — nearly 14 percent more cubic feet. The pallet's own weight pushes back the other way, but only a little: 37 lb spread over 50 cubic feet is 0.7 lb per cubic foot of help against a 14 percent volume penalty. Net, palletising light freight lowers its density and raises its class.

The footprint follows the same logic. If the load overhangs the pallet the carrier measures the load; if the pallet is wider than the load the carrier measures the pallet. The calculator takes the larger of the two in each direction, because that is what a dimensioner does with a laser.

One shipment, one density — not the average of the pieces

With more than one handling unit, density is computed for the shipment as a whole: total weight over total volume, divided once. It is not the average of the individual densities, and the two answers genuinely differ.

Take one 24-inch carton weighing 20 lb — 8 cubic feet at 2.5 lb per cubic foot — moving alongside a 48 × 40 × 48 inch pallet weighing 800 lb, which is 53.33 cubic feet at 15 lb per cubic foot. Average the two piece densities and you get 8.75, which reads as class 110. Do it properly and the shipment is 820 lb over 61.33 cubic feet, or 13.37 lb per cubic foot, which is class 85 — two classes cheaper. The mean of a set of ratios is not the ratio of the sums, and the gap widens the more the pieces differ in size. Averaging piece densities is a spreadsheet habit that quietly produces the wrong class.

A practical consequence: consolidating two light pallets into one taller pallet often lowers the class, because the wasted air between them disappears and only one pallet's height is counted instead of two.

What a higher class costs, and when packing tighter pays

Class is not a smooth function of density — it is a staircase. The gap between adjacent classes typically works out to something between 5 and 15 percent of the linehaul rate, and the gap between class 100 and class 250 can be a multiple. That means a shipment sitting just under a bracket boundary is worth a few minutes of attention, and a shipment sitting just over one is worth protecting.

That is what the panel under the results is for. It tells you two things the carrier's quote never will: how many pounds you would have to add at the current volume, or how many cubic feet you would have to remove at the current weight, to land in the next cheaper class — and how much slack you have before you fall into the next dearer one. The 437 lb pallet from earlier sits at 8.64 lb per cubic foot: 0.36 away from class 100 above it, 0.64 away from class 125 below it. In pounds that is 18 lb more freight on the same pallet to reach the cheaper class, and 33 lb of shrinkage before it falls into the dearer one. In inches it is two: taking the stack from 45.5 to 43.5 inches gets there at the same weight, which may be worth more than a rate negotiation.

Concretely, the moves that raise density are: a right-sized carton instead of a stock one, less void fill, no half-empty top layer, no pallet where none is needed, and consolidating orders shipping to the same consignee.

Reweigh, remeasure, reclass: what happens on the dock

Every major LTL carrier now runs freight through a forklift-mounted or overhead dimensioner that photographs, measures and weighs each handling unit in seconds. If what it records differs from the bill of lading, an inspection certificate is issued and the shipment is rebilled — often with an inspection fee on top.

Two habits avoid nearly all of it. Measure the extreme points, including overhang, shrink wrap and anything protruding, and round up to the nearest inch rather than down. And weigh the loaded pallet on a floor scale rather than adding the carton weights from the packing list, because packaging, pallet and dunnage are real pounds the carrier will find.

How do I calculate freight class?

Multiply length by width by height in inches to get cubic inches, divide by 1,728 to get cubic feet, then divide the total weight in pounds by that figure. A 48 by 40 by 45.5 inch pallet weighing 437 lb is 50.56 cubic feet, which is 8.64 lb per cubic foot, which is class 110.
