Concrete mistakes on a slab or driveway pour, priced one by one
Curing a 20 by 24 ft driveway costs $56.97 in plastic sheeting; NRMCA says concrete left to dry out can lose as much as 50 percent of the strength it was designed to reach.
The most expensive concrete mistake is letting a fresh slab dry out instead of curing it: NRMCA says concrete in a dry environment can lose as much as 50 percent of its potential strength, $56.97 of 4 mil plastic prevents it, and repouring the 20 by 24 ft driveway underneath costs $4,808.09.
Concrete forgives almost nothing after the truck leaves. The other nine mistakes run the same way. Pouring 5 inches instead of 4 on that driveway costs $272 at the truck, and replacing one cracked 10 by 12 ft panel afterward costs $1,307.56.

Which driveway do these numbers come from?
One slab, declared once. A 20 by 24 ft driveway, 480 square feet, 5 inches thick, on 4 inches of compacted base. Volume is 480 times 5/12, or 200 cubic feet, which is 7.41 cubic yards; with 8% for base irregularity and spillage you order 8.0 yards. At $170 a yard plus $140 of delivery the concrete is $1,500. Labor runs at $41.86 an hour, the BLS mean wage for cement masons in May 2025 ($28.87) times 46.65 divided by 32.17, the ratio of total compensation to wages in the June 2026 employer cost survey. What does adding water at the truck do to the slab?
The driver asks, someone says yes, and the slab loses strength nobody will measure until it fails. NRMCA's rule of thumb is that 1 gallon of water per cubic yard, roughly 10 lb, raises slump by about 1 inch. Run it through the mix: a 6 sack mix is 564 lb of cementitious material per yard, and at a water-cement ratio of 0.45 that is 253.8 lb of water. A gallon of water weighs 8.34 lb, so 3 gallons a yard is 25.0 lb and puts you at 278.8 lb, a ratio of 0.494, past the 0.45 ACI 318 allows for exposure class F3 plain concrete, which is what a salted driveway is. Across the 8 yard load that is 24 gallons nobody weighed.
ASTM C94 does permit water at the jobsite, inside limits, and it also requires 30 more mixer revolutions afterward, every gallon written on the ticket, and no water once about a quarter yard has left the drum. More slump is an admixture decision made at the pre-pour conference, not a hose decision made in the driveway.
Why did my driveway crack under a truck?
NRMCA's list of what causes cracking puts improper subgrade preparation second, right after bad jointing. The requirement is not complicated: topsoil and soft spots out, compacted soil or granular fill in, compacted by rolling, vibrating or tamping, sloped for drainage, never placed on frozen ground. The base here is 5.93 cubic yards of material that has to be compacted rather than dumped, and that work plus the forms and the steel is done before the truck arrives. A truck waiting while somebody rakes gravel is a truck whose load is stiffening.
Thickness is the same decision seen from above. Quikrete's driveway guide says 4 inches is sufficient for passenger cars only, and recommends 5 or 6 inches where trucks and heavy vehicles will use it. The cost of the inch is exact: at 4 inches the slab takes 6.4 yards ordered, $1,228 of concrete against $1,500, so the upgrade is $272. A loaded pickup on a 4 inch slab cracks it, and the fix is the $4,808.09 line.
Why did my slab crack even though it has joints?
A slab cracks. Joints decide where. NRMCA sets maximum spacing at 24 to 36 times the slab thickness, which for 5 inches is 10 to 15 feet, and caps any slab at 15 feet. Panels should be square or close, the long side no more than 1.5 times the short side, and no L-shapes. One joint each way here gives four 10 by 12 ft panels and 44 linear feet of joint.
Depth is where homeowners lose it. The groove has to reach a quarter of the slab depth, 1.25 inches here, and never less than 1 inch. A decorative groover is a line, not a control joint. Timing is the other trap: conventional saw cuts run 4 to 12 hours after finishing, early-entry dry cuts 1 to 4 hours after and shallower, still at least 1 inch. If the edges ravel behind the blade you are early; if the slab has already cracked, the joints are decoration. Cut out alternate wires or discontinue the mesh across joints, because steel running through a joint fights it.
Does rebar or mesh lying on the ground do anything?
Reinforcement does nothing until the concrete cracks, and then it only works where it is. Drawings put welded wire reinforcement 2 inches below the surface or in the upper third of the thickness. In a 5 inch slab the upper third is the top 1.67 inches, so mesh resting on the base is about 3 inches out of position for the cracks it is meant to hold together. ACI 302.1R is direct about the habits that cause it: do not lay the mesh on the ground and pull it up after placing, and do not walk it in.
There is a money decision buried in that. The ASCC notes that for light wire at 6 inches both ways the bolsters can cost more than the mesh, and that support bars end up with about the area the mesh provides. If the chairs cost more than the steel, buy bars and size the grid in the rebar calculator. Neither prevents cracking, which is what the joints are for.
What happens if concrete is poured too cold or too hot?
Cold weather has a definition: more than 3 consecutive days with an average daily temperature below 40 degrees F, and air temperature not above 50 for more than half of any 24 hours. Fresh concrete freezes below about 25 degrees F, and NRMCA says the potential strength of frozen concrete can be reduced by more than 50%. Protect it from freezing until it reaches 500 psi, roughly two days, and from freeze-thaw cycles until 3,500 psi. Sections under 12 inches go in at 55 degrees F. A 20 degree drop roughly doubles setting time, the slab should not cool faster than 5 degrees F per hour for the first day, and the surface-to-core difference stays under about 35 degrees.
Heat costs you the other way. NRMCA's water demand chart for a 3 inch slump with 1-1/2 inch aggregate runs from 250 to 310 lb per cubic yard across concrete temperatures of 30 to 110 degrees F, so more water arrives at the same cement content without anyone deciding. Initial set collapses too, from about 14 hours toward nothing across 40 to 120 degrees, so the finishing window shrinks while the surface dries faster than it bleeds.
Why is my new concrete flaking off in thin layers?
Bleeding is mixing water rising as the solids settle. Seal that surface while it is still happening and the water has nowhere to go. NRMCA's sequence: bull float soon after strike-off, before bleed water appears, then wait until bleeding has stopped and the sheen is gone. Finishing during bleeding produces dusting, scaling, crazing, delamination and blisters, and sprinkling water or cement on the surface to ease finishing does the same.
Delaminations are the expensive version: sheets of surface 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick that separate and break off weeks later, invisible while the crew is on site. A vapor retarder directly under the slab increases both the amount and the duration of bleeding, and entrained air makes the sheen vanish before the concrete has set, which is why air-entrained concrete should not be specified for hard-troweled slabs (3% maximum). Repair means grinding and overlaying.
Why is my concrete dusting, and when can I seal it?
This is the cheapest mistake to avoid and one of the most expensive to carry. Concrete in a dry environment can lose as much as 50 percent of the strength it would have reached moist-cured. Cure at least 3 to 7 days, keep the concrete above 50 degrees F, and if you use plastic, use film that conforms to ASTM C171 and is at least 4 mils thick, extending past the slab edge by twice the slab thickness. Price it: the slab plus a 10 inch overhang each side is 21.67 by 25.67 feet, 556 square feet. A 10 by 25 ft roll of 4 mil poly is 250 sq ft at $18.99, so two rolls fall short and three cost $56.97, on a driveway whose concrete alone is $1,500.
Then leave the sealer alone. Quikrete's high gloss sealer and its waterproofing sealer both say to allow a minimum of 30 days for new concrete to cure first. A cure-and-seal works the opposite way: it goes on after finishing once the concrete has hardened, at 200 sq ft per gallon to comply with ASTM C309, because its job is to keep the water in. A film-forming sealer on a green slab traps moisture, and stripping a blushed sealer costs more than waiting did.
What does each concrete mistake cost to fix?
Two repair baselines run through the table. One 10 by 12 ft panel takes 2.0 yards ordered: $340 of concrete, $140 of delivery, 1.852 cubic yards of old slab dumped at Larimer County's $40 a yard ($74.08), and 18 crew-hours at $41.86, for $1,307.56. Repouring the whole driveway is 24 hours of demolition and haul ($1,004.64), $237.20 of disposal for the old 4 inch slab, $1,500 of concrete, 48 hours to form, place and finish ($2,009.28) and $56.97 of plastic: $4,808.09, or $10.02 per square foot.
