A small opening does not save you a sheet

This is the error that separates a useful estimate from one that sends you back to the store. Most calculators subtract every door and every window from the wall area, because subtracting is easy and looks rigorous. On site it does not work that way.

A window sitting in the middle of a wall gets cut out of a full sheet. You hang the whole panel, mark the opening, cut, and the piece you removed goes in the skip. Nothing was saved. If the estimate deducted those 4 or 6 square feet, you bought less board than you hang, and you find out at the worst possible moment — with the crew standing there.

Large openings are different. A patio door or a wide window is big enough that the sheets around it are cut down and reused as the pieces above and beside it, so the deduction is real. The dividing line is a judgement call, which is exactly why it is an editable field here rather than a constant buried in the code. The default of 16 sq ft deducts a standard door and keeps a bathroom window in the count.

One more detail that matters: openings are judged individually, never summed. Two 8 sq ft windows are two separate cut-outs producing two separate pieces of scrap. Adding them to 16 sq ft and calling it a deduction would be wrong twice over. And the result panel tells you plainly how many openings were ignored, because a deduction that silently did not happen is a number nobody can trust.

Sheet size changes the joints, not just the count

Sheet size is usually treated as a purchasing detail. It is a design decision, and it has a second effect almost nobody estimates.

Each sheet contributes half of its perimeter to the joint network — the other half belongs to its neighbour. So joint length per unit area is (width + length) divided by area. For a 4x8 that is about 0.38 linear feet of joint for every square foot of wall. For a 4x12 it is 0.33. Twelve percent less joint means twelve percent less tape, less compound, less sanding time, and twelve percent fewer linear feet that can crack in three years.

That is the real argument for long panels in a room with a high ceiling: a 12 ft sheet run horizontally across a 9 ft wall eliminates the butt joints entirely on most walls, and butt joints are the ones that show. It is also why this tool computes compound per foot of joint instead of per square foot of wall — a per-area figure would erase the exact difference you are trying to evaluate.

Level 3, 4 and 5 are not the same amount of mud

Finish level is a specification, not a preference, and it changes the compound order substantially.

Choose Level 5 for the wall the evening sun rakes across, not for the whole house. It is a material and labour cost that only pays for itself where the light will find the flaws.

Screws: the ceiling is not the wall

Fastener spacing is a grid, defined by two independent numbers: how far apart the framing sits, and how far apart the screws sit along each framing member. The number of fixings in a panel is lines multiplied by screws per line — with one at each end in both directions, which is where the naive estimate goes wrong. On a 4 ft wide sheet with framing at 16 in. there are four lines, not three. Ignoring the edges undercounts by around 40%.

Ceilings get a tighter pattern than walls, typically 12 in. against 16 in., and the reason is not fussiness. Gravity pulls on a ceiling panel permanently. A wall panel that is under-fixed develops a crack; a ceiling panel that is under-fixed comes down. Steel framing also wants a tighter pattern than wood, because the screw is threading into a thin steel section rather than biting into fibre.

Both spacings stay editable in the tool. Board manufacturers and local code both have opinions, and they outrank any default we could ship.

Why joints crack, and why it is rarely the tape

The failure everybody blames on the finisher usually happened before the tape went on.

Butt joints — where two factory-cut ends meet — have no tapered recess, so the compound has to build a hump wide enough to hide the step. That hump is thicker, dries slower and moves more. Planning sheet layout so butt joints land away from the middle of a wall, or disappear entirely behind long panels, removes the problem instead of finishing around it.

The second cause is movement in the structure. A panel screwed tight across a framing member that shrinks or deflects will crack at the nearest joint. This is why board is hung perpendicular to the framing where possible: the panel ties more members together and the joints fall away from the span.

The third is timing. Compound shrinks as it dries. A second coat applied over a first that was still damp shrinks twice, and the crack appears weeks later when nobody connects it to the schedule.

Nothing heavy hangs on drywall

Gypsum board is a surface, not a structure. Toggles and expanding anchors carry a picture frame and a small shelf; they do not carry a wall-mounted television on a cantilevered arm, a run of kitchen cabinets, a grab rail that has to survive somebody's whole weight, or a heavy mirror in a bathroom.

All of those need blocking — plywood or extra framing installed behind the board before it goes up. Which means the decision has to be made at framing stage, while the wall is still open. Retrofitting blocking means cutting the finished wall, re-taping and repainting, and it is the most common regret on an otherwise clean drywall job. Walk the room with a tape measure before the board goes on and mark every heavy thing that will ever hang there.

Metric and imperial are different standards, not translations

Four feet is 1.219 m, and the metric standard sheet is 1.20 m. They are close, and they are not the same panel. A calculator that switches units by swapping the label is quietly telling you a 4x8 became a 1.20 x 2.40, which changes the sheet count and the joint length.

So this tool does two separate things. Switching the unit system converts every number you typed, because your ceiling height is a measurement of the real world and it does not change meaning. And the sheet selector drops to "custom", so you can pick the panel your supplier actually stocks. The same applies to the labour rate: a price per square metre is not the same number as a price per square foot, and the field converts.

What this estimate does not include

It sizes board, fasteners, compound, tape and wall framing. It does not price the suspension system for a dropped ceiling — furring channel, clips and hangers are a different kit from wall studs, and mixing them into one profile count would be misleading, so the channel length is shown as information only.

It also does not decide board type for you. Wet areas need a moisture-resistant panel, fire-rated separations need a fire-rated one, and both cost more per sheet than standard board — put the right price in the sheet field. And it estimates for purchase, not as a structural specification: compound coverage in particular varies with the crew and the mix, so check the figure here against the bag before you order a pallet.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the calculator ignore my small window?

Because deducting it would make you buy too little board. A 2 ft by 2 ft window sits in the middle of a panel, so you still hang a full sheet and cut the hole out of it — the 4 square feet you removed from the estimate never existed as savings, and the offcut is scrap. The tool only deducts openings above a threshold you can see and edit, defaulting to 16 sq ft (about 1.5 m²). That leaves a standard door being deducted and a bathroom window not. Openings are judged one at a time, never added together: two 8 sq ft windows are two separate cut-outs, not one 16 sq ft hole.

Does the sheet size change anything besides the sheet count?

It changes the total length of joint, which is what drives tape and compound. Each sheet contributes half its perimeter of joint, so joint length per square foot is (width + length) ÷ (width × length). A 4x8 gives about 0.38 linear feet of joint per square foot; a 4x12 gives 0.33 — roughly 12% less tape, less compound, less sanding and 12% fewer places for a crack to start. How many screws per sheet should I expect?

It is a grid, not a rate. The framing lines cross the sheet at the stud spacing, and screws run along each line at the screw spacing, plus one at each end in both directions. A 4x8 sheet on wood studs at 16 in. o.c. with screws at 16 in. gives 7 lines of 4, so 28 screws. The same sheet on a ceiling at 12 in. screw spacing gives 7 lines of 5, so 35. Averaging with a single screws-per-square-foot figure undercounts by roughly 40%, because it ignores the screws at the panel edges.

How much joint compound does Level 5 add?

Level 5 is a skim coat over the entire surface, so it stops scaling with joint length and starts scaling with area. On a typical room the tool shows Level 5 needing roughly 60 to 70% more compound than Level 4. Level 3 is the opposite direction: it stops one coat short because texture or a heavy paint is going over it. If you are painting flat and the light is not raking across the wall, Level 4 is the standard and Level 5 is money you do not need to spend.

Can I hang a TV or a cabinet on the finished wall?

Not on the board. Gypsum panel has almost no pull-out strength; a toggle anchor holds a picture, not a 60-pound cantilevered bracket. Anything heavy needs blocking — plywood or a stud placed behind the board before it goes up. That means deciding where the TV, the wall cabinets, the grab rails and the floating shelves go before you close the wall, not after. This is the single most common regret in a drywall job, and it costs nothing to fix at framing stage.
