How to paint kitchen cabinets: the prep, the primer, the paint and what it costs

Painting the cabinets in a 10 by 12 kitchen takes about $216 of materials and a week of calendar, against $778 to $1,554 for a painter and $4,500 or more to reface.

To paint kitchen cabinets, take off the doors and hardware, degrease every surface, scuff-sand until the gloss is gone, apply a bonding primer, then brush and roll two thin coats of cabinet enamel, waiting out the recoat time between coats. For a 10 by 12 kitchen that is about $216 in materials and roughly a week.

Time: one day of prep, then 2 to 4 days of painting depending on the paint's recoat time, and 5 to 7 days before the doors take normal abuse. DIY materials for the kitchen on this page: about $216. A painter: $778 to $1,554 (Homewyse, May 2026). Difficulty: moderate; the work is easy and the patience is hard. Do not do it yourself if the house was built before 1978 and you have not tested the old finish for lead, if the doors are peeling thermofoil or delaminating veneer, or if the boxes are water-damaged. Paint will not fix any of those.

The kitchen this guide prices

Every quantity below comes from one declared kitchen: 10 by 12 ft, L-shaped, with 16 linear feet of base cabinets 34.5 inches tall and 12 linear feet of wall cabinets 30 inches tall. There are 10 wall doors of 15 by 30 inches, 8 base doors of 15 by 24 inches and 6 drawer fronts of 15 by 6 inches. Doors get painted on both faces, drawer fronts on the face only.

Cabinet interiors stay as they are. Painting them roughly doubles the surface and adds nothing anyone sees with the doors shut.

What is the best primer and paint for kitchen cabinets?

A bonding primer, shellac or waterborne, under a waterborne enamel whose data sheet names cabinets or trim. Cabinets fail at adhesion. A factory finish is hard and slick, and kitchen grease makes it worse, so the primer's job is to grip that surface and give the enamel something it can bond to. Two kinds work.

Shellac primer (Zinsser B-I-N) is the old answer. Zinsser's data sheet claims excellent adhesion to glossy surfaces without scuff sanding, it blocks knots and grease stains, and it can be recoated in 45 minutes. It smells strongly of alcohol, needs ventilation, and cleans up with ammonia and water or denatured alcohol. Waterborne bonding primers (Sherwin-Williams Extreme Bond, which lists kitchen cabinets by name, or Benjamin Moore Fresh Start 046, which the Advance data sheet specifies for MDF and laminate) are low odor and clean up with water. Extreme Bond has one rule people miss: it has to be topcoated within 14 days.

For the finish, forget wall paint. The two cabinet enamels whose data sheets I read are both waterborne and both behave like the old oil paints once they harden:

Product (data sheet)ResinCoverageRecoatBefore heavy use
Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim EnamelUrethane-modified alkyd350 to 400 sq ft/gal4 hNot stated on the PDS
Benjamin Moore AdvanceWaterborne alkyd400 to 500 sq ft/gal16 h5 to 7 days; up to 30 days to full hardness
Zinsser B-I-N (primer)Shellacabout 500 sq ft/gal45 minFull cure 1 to 3 days
SW Extreme Bond (primer)Urethane-modified acrylic450 to 500 sq ft/gal1 hTopcoat within 14 days

The recoat column decides your week. With Advance, each face of each door needs two coats 16 hours apart, and you cannot flip a door onto a face that is still soft. Back faces take day one and day two, fronts take day three and day four. Emerald Urethane at 4 hours can put two coats on one face in a day, so the same doors take two days. Advance's reward for the wait is what Benjamin Moore calls excellent flow and leveling and an extended open time: brush marks have longer to melt out before the film sets.

All the times above are at 77°F and 50% relative humidity (70°F for B-I-N). A cool, damp garage in October stretches every one of them.

How much paint you need for kitchen cabinets, and the materials list

This kitchen needs one gallon of enamel and two quarts of primer, and the full materials list comes to $216.47. Quantities come from the paint calculator's own math (litresFor and bestCanMix in paintmath.js) so this list and the paint calculator agree. Primer: 144 sq ft, one coat, at 500 sq ft/gal is 0.29 gallon, and the cheapest way to buy it is two quarts. Paint: 144 sq ft, two coats, at 400 sq ft/gal (the low end of Advance's range, because a door has edges and panels) is 0.72 gallon, and one gallon beats three quarts.

Your kitchen: enter the door and drawer-front area, the coats and the coverage on the can.

Tools, and whether to brush, roll or spray

For 24 pieces, brush the recesses, roll the flat areas with a mini roller and leave the sprayer on the shelf. Indispensable: a drill or screwdriver for hinges, a tape measure, zip-top bags and a marker, rags, a bucket, and something to hold doors flat off the table. Painter's pyramids work, and so do screws driven partway into scrap boards. You also need a respirator or at least good ventilation for the shellac.

Worth buying if you want a sprayed look: an HVLP sprayer. The Wagner FLEXiO 2500 was $159 at Menards on September 19, 2026. Both data sheets publish HVLP settings, and Benjamin Moore's calls for 20 psi with 4 fluid ounces of water per gallon of Advance. A sprayer adds $159 and a lot of masking and overspray cleanup. On 24 pieces I would brush and roll, and keep the sprayer money for the better paint.

Luxury: a dedicated spray booth, a drying rack system, or a second brush. The brush above, cleaned between coats, does the whole kitchen.

How to paint kitchen cabinets, step by step

  1. Check the house's age. If it was built before 1978, the old cabinet finish may contain lead, and every step below involves sanding. EPA's RRP rule requires anyone paid to disturb paint in a pre-1978 home to be certified; it generally does not apply to you working on your own home, but EPA still recommends testing by a certified inspector and lead-safe practices: mist before sanding, no dry power sanding without a HEPA vacuum attachment. The minor-repair exception stops at 6 sq ft of interior surface, and this kitchen is 144. Check: you know whether the finish has lead before any sandpaper touches it.
  2. Remove doors, drawer fronts and hardware. Put a strip of tape inside each opening and on the back of the matching door with the same number, and bag each door's hinges and screws with that number. Check: 24 pieces, 24 numbers, and every bag labeled.
  3. Degrease every surface, with extra attention to the doors near the range and around the pulls. Rinse with clean water and let it dry. Zinsser warns against TSP as a cleaner under B-I-N, and Sherwin-Williams warns against mineral spirits under Extreme Bond, so use a water-based degreaser. Check: a clean white rag wiped hard across the door by the stove comes back clean.
  4. Fill dings and old hardware holes you will not reuse with spackling, let it dry, sand flush. Check: run a fingertip over the patch; you should not feel an edge.
  5. Scuff-sand everything with the fine sponge until the gloss is gone. Benjamin Moore specifies 220 grit or coarser for cabinetry before priming. Vacuum, then wipe with a damp cloth. Check: look along the surface toward a window; no shiny patches.
  6. Prime. Brush the recesses of paneled doors first, then roll the flat areas and tip off with the brush in the direction of the grain. B-I-N can be recoated in 45 minutes at 70°F; waterborne Extreme Bond in 1 hour. Check: after drying, a fingernail dragged across the primer does not lift it, and dark stains or knots are covered.
  7. Sand the primer lightly with the fine sponge and wipe off the dust. Benjamin Moore recommends light sanding between coats for a smoother finish. Check: the surface feels smooth, and you have not cut through to the old finish at edges.
  8. First coat of enamel on the back faces of the doors and on the boxes. Roll with a 1/4 to 1/2 in nap (the range Sherwin-Williams gives) and tip off each panel in one direction without going back over it. Check: no drips on the lower edges 10 minutes later, and the brush marks are fading as it levels.
  9. Wait out the recoat time: 4 hours for Emerald Urethane, 16 for Advance, longer in a cool or damp room. Then the second coat on the same faces. Check: the first coat is dry enough that light sanding makes fine powder, not gummy rolls.
  10. Flip the doors when the back faces have had at least the recoat time since the last coat, and repeat steps 8 and 9 on the fronts. Check: the back face shows no marks from the stands after flipping.
  11. Rehang the doors after a few days, by the numbers, and adjust the hinges. Put felt bumpers on the doors. Benjamin Moore says 5 to 7 days before heavy abrasion and up to 30 days to full hardness. Check: every door closes flat with an even gap, and nothing sticks to the frame when you open it the next morning.

DIY time for this kitchen, my estimate for a first-timer: about 25 hours of hands-on work spread over 5 or 6 days with Advance, or 4 to 5 days with a 4-hour recoat paint.

Mistakes that cost money

Skipping the degreasing. The paint looks fine for a month and then peels where hands and cooking oil hit it most. The fix is to strip or sand those doors back and do the primer and two coats again: at least the $148.95 in primer and paint from the list above, plus another week.

Buying the wrong can sizes. Three quarts of Advance cost $107.97 and hold 0.75 gallon; one gallon costs $88.99. Buying quarts because 0.72 gallon "sounds like three quarts" throws away $18.98 and leaves you no touch-up paint.

Recoating on the clock of a warm day when the room is cold. The second coat seals in a soft first coat, and the film stays soft for weeks. You find out when a door sticks to the frame and tears. Repair is a sand and recoat of that door, and a quart of Advance for touch-ups is $35.99.

Not labeling doors. Cabinet doors that look identical rarely hang identically. Two hours spent matching hinges to openings is $68 of a painter's time at the loaded rate below, and it is your Saturday.

Painting peeling thermofoil or loose veneer. Paint bonds to whatever is under it, and if that layer is letting go, it takes the paint with it. The whole $216 is gone and the doors still need replacing.

How much does it cost to paint kitchen cabinets?

For this kitchen, about $216 in materials if you do it yourself, $778 to $1,554 for a painter, and $4,500 to $13,000 to have the cabinets refaced instead. Painters (BLS occupation 47-2141) earned a median of $23.75 an hour nationally in May 2025. Divide by 0.695, because wages are 69.5% of total compensation in private construction (BLS ECEC, June 2026), and the cost of the worker is $34.17 an hour before any business overhead or profit.

Area (OEWS, May 2025)Painter medianLoaded hour
Texas$21.86$31.45
Florida$22.85$32.88
United States$23.75$34.17
California$28.38$40.83
New York$28.64$41.21

Homewyse's May 2026 national range for painting cabinets is $5.40 to $10.79 per square foot. On 144 sq ft that is $778 to $1,554. Against $216 in materials, doing it yourself saves $561 to $1,337. Spread over my 25-hour estimate, your time is worth $22 to $53 an hour, which brackets the $34.17 a painter costs an employer. The low quote is close to a wash if your weekends are expensive; the high one pays you well.

If the boxes are sound and the layout works, paint. Refacing buys new door shapes. Replacing buys a new layout, and at that point the cabinets are only one line of a kitchen remodel. If a door is swollen from a leak, replace that door and paint the rest.

Planning the walls as well? The guide on how to paint a room walks a bedroom through the same prep, the paint calculator takes the room dimensions and gives the can mix, and if a wall needs patching first, the drywall calculator covers the board and mud.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to sand kitchen cabinets before painting?

You need to dull them, which is less work than it sounds. Benjamin Moore's data sheet for Advance says cabinet surfaces should be roughened by sanding with 220 grit or coarser before priming, and Sherwin-Williams says glossy surfaces should be sanded dull. A fine sanding sponge until the shine is gone is enough; you are not trying to reach bare wood. The two bonding primers on this page relax that rule: Zinsser says B-I-N shellac primer has excellent adhesion to glossy surfaces without scuff sanding, and Sherwin-Williams says sanding may not be necessary with Extreme Bond on most clean surfaces. I would still scuff. A sanding sponge six-pack costs $15.49, and redoing a peeling kitchen costs the whole job again. In a house built before 1978, test for lead before you sand anything.

What is the best paint for kitchen cabinets?

A waterborne enamel built for trim and cabinets, over a bonding primer. The two covered here are Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel, a urethane-modified alkyd that can be recoated in 4 hours, and Benjamin Moore Advance, a waterborne alkyd that levels very flat but needs 16 hours between coats and up to 30 days to reach full hardness. Both clean up with water. For this 10 by 12 kitchen, one gallon of Advance at $88.99 covers two coats on 144 sq ft with paint to spare. Pick a product whose data sheet names cabinets or trim; Advance's lists cabinets, and Benjamin Moore describes it as block-resistant, meaning painted surfaces pressed together do not stick.

How long does cabinet paint take to cure?

Longer than it takes to dry. Benjamin Moore says not to return Advance-painted shelves or tabletops to service, or expose them to heavy abrasion, for at least 5 to 7 days, and that it can take up to 30 days to reach optimum hardness in some conditions. Zinsser's B-I-N primer reaches full adhesion and hardness in 1 to 3 days. Dry to the touch means you can handle a door by its edges. Cured means the film can take a pot banging into it. Rehang doors after a few days, but close them gently and keep bumpers on for the first month.

Is it cheaper to paint or reface kitchen cabinets?

Painting is far cheaper. For the 10 by 12 kitchen on this page, doing it yourself costs about $216 in materials and hiring a painter about $778 to $1,554 by Homewyse's May 2026 range. This Old House puts professional refacing at $4,500 to $13,000, and new stock cabinets alone at $80 to $250 per linear foot, which is $2,240 to $7,000 for 28 linear feet before installation or countertops. Refacing or replacing makes sense when the boxes are damaged or the layout is wrong. Paint fixes color and wear, and nothing else.

Can I paint kitchen cabinets without removing the doors?

You can, and it is the main reason cabinet paint jobs look homemade. With doors on, you paint hinges or tape them, the hinge side of the door edge is unreachable, and you cannot lay the door flat, so the enamel sags instead of leveling. Removing 18 doors and 6 drawer fronts takes a drill and an hour. Number every door and its opening with tape, keep hinges and screws in labeled bags, and paint flat on stands.

How long does it take to paint kitchen cabinets?

About a week of calendar for a first-timer, most of it waiting. For the 10 by 12 kitchen on this page, figure one day of prep, then 2 to 4 days of painting depending on the paint's recoat time, which is about 25 hours of hands-on work over 5 or 6 days with Benjamin Moore Advance (16 hours between coats), or 4 to 5 days with a 4-hour recoat paint. Then allow 5 to 7 days before the doors take heavy use.

Is it better to brush, roll or spray kitchen cabinets?

For a typical kitchen, brush and roll. Brush the recesses of paneled doors, roll the flat areas with a 1/4 to 1/2 inch nap, the range Sherwin-Williams gives, and tip each panel off in one direction. An HVLP sprayer such as the Wagner FLEXiO 2500 ($159 at Menards on September 19, 2026) can give a sprayed look, and both enamel data sheets publish HVLP settings, but it adds masking and overspray cleanup. On 24 pieces the $159 buys more as better paint.

How long should I wait between coats of paint on cabinets?

Whatever the can says at 77°F and 50% relative humidity, and longer when it is cooler or damp. That is 4 hours for Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel and 16 hours for Benjamin Moore Advance. The primer is faster: 45 minutes for B-I-N and 1 hour for Extreme Bond as a primer. Recoating too soon traps solvent under the second coat and leaves a soft film that marks easily.
