Interior painting mistakes that cost money, and what each one costs to fix

Degreaser and sanding sponges for a kitchen of cabinets cost $20.48. Redoing that kitchen because the enamel peeled is about 25 hours of painter's time, $854.25.

The most expensive interior painting mistake is putting enamel on kitchen cabinets that were never degreased or scuffed: $20.48 of degreaser and sanding sponges prevents it, and stripping and repainting 18 doors and 6 drawer fronts is about 25 hours of painter's time, $854.25.

Paint failures are prep failures. Almost every one of the nine below is decided before the first coat, costs a few dollars to prevent, and costs the whole job to fix. Prices are from September 20, 2026, and times are straight off the manufacturers' data sheets.

Why is the paint peeling off my kitchen cabinets?

Kitchen cabinet doors carry a film of cooking grease that you cannot see and paint cannot stick to. Benjamin Moore's Advance data sheet is blunt about it: surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, dust, grease, oil, soap and wax, and cabinetry is to be roughened by sanding with 220 grit or coarser before priming, with all dust cleaned afterward. Sherwin-Williams adds that glossy areas should be sanded dull.

A 32 oz bottle of kitchen degreaser is $4.99 and a six-pack of fine-grit angled sanding sponges is $15.49. Twenty dollars and change, plus an afternoon. The failure mode is not subtle: the enamel looks fine for a month, then comes off in sheets at the door edges where hands touch it.

Fixing that means stripping 18 doors and 6 drawer fronts and starting over. Call it 25 hours of hands-on work, which is my estimate. At the May 2025 national median painter wage of $23.75, loaded to an employer cost of $34.17, those hours are $854.25 before any paint. The prep is 2.4% of the redo.

Can I paint cabinets without a bonding primer?

A cabinet topcoat is not a bonding coat, and the primer is where adhesion is bought. Two products do that job on slick surfaces. Zinsser B-I-N is a shellac-base primer with, in its own words, excellent adhesion to glossy surfaces without scuff sanding, dry to touch in 20 minutes and recoatable in 45. Sherwin-Williams Extreme Bond is a waterborne urethane-modified acrylic designed for hard, slick, glossy surfaces with minimal preparation, and it lists kitchen cabinets among its uses.

Read the fine print on both. B-I-N still requires a surface free of grease, oil and wax, and says not to use TSP as the cleaner. Extreme Bond still recommends dulling on glossy, extremely hard surfaces for maximum adhesion, and it has to be topcoated within 14 days, which is a real deadline if you prime on a Saturday and then travel.

B-I-N's practical coverage is about 500 sq ft per gallon, so the 144 sq ft cabinet case needs 0.29 gallons. A quart covers 125 sq ft, which is short, so buy two quarts at $29.98 each, $59.96. That is the entire insurance premium on the $854.25 above.

Why won't paint stick to a chalky or glossy wall?

Chalk is degraded binder that has turned to loose powder on the surface of an old film. Paint applied over it bonds to the powder, and the powder is bonded to nothing. B-I-N's preparation section lists the disqualifiers together: surfaces must be clean, dry, sound and free of dust, dirt, excessive chalky material, grime, grease, oil, wax and mildew.

Test it with a dark cloth. If it comes away white, wash the wall, rinse it, let it dry fully, then prime with a product rated for the surface. Gloss is the same problem by a different route: nothing for the new film to key into. Sand it dull, or use a primer whose data sheet says in writing that it bonds to gloss.

Did I pick the wrong sheen for this room?

Sheen is a measured physical property of the film. Sherwin-Williams reads it by deflecting a single beam of light off the surface at a 60 or 85 degree angle, and sorts its products into flat, satin, semi-gloss and gloss categories from the result. Higher sheen means a tighter, harder film that takes washing; lower sheen scatters light and hides a wavy wall.

Sherwin-Williams recommends semi-gloss in kitchens for easy cleaning, satin or semi-gloss in bathrooms because they withstand moisture, flat on ceilings, and eggshell or satin in bedrooms, with flat or eggshell wherever the priority is covering imperfections. Flat in a kitchen means you cannot wipe a grease splatter off without burnishing a shiny patch into the wall. Semi-gloss on a poorly finished bedroom wall means every taping ridge shows up at sunset.

Either way the fix is a repaint. The 12-by-14 bedroom on this page is 365 sq ft of wall. Three gallons of an interior paint and primer at $26.88 is $80.64, plus about 8 hours at $34.17, which is $273.36. Total $354.00 to undo a choice that cost nothing to make correctly.

Why is my second coat still soft or marking?

Every data sheet publishes two different numbers, dry to touch and dry to recoat, and the second one is the one that matters. Benjamin Moore Advance is dry to touch in 4 to 6 hours and ready to recoat at 16 hours, at 77°F and 50% relative humidity. Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane recoats at 4 hours. B-I-N recoats at 45 minutes. All three sheets say the same thing about conditions: high humidity or cooler temperatures prolong dry, recoat and cure times.

Recoating early seals solvent under a skin that has not released it. The film stays soft, marks under a fingernail and sometimes wrinkles. Advance goes further and separates cure from recoat: no heavy abrasion and no returning shelves or tabletops to service for at least 5 to 7 days, and up to 30 days to reach optimum hardness. A cabinet door rehung and slammed on day three is a dent you keep.

Why did the painter's tape pull my new paint off?

Two mistakes, one cause: something is between the paint and the wall. Advance's sheet says drywall surfaces must be free of sanding dust, and Emerald's says to remove all sanding dust. Joint compound dust is fine enough to look like nothing on a white wall and thick enough to keep a brushed edge from bonding, which is why cut-in lines are where peeling starts. Vacuum the wall, then wipe it.

Tape has the same requirement and a clock on top of it. 3M's data sheet for Scotch Delicate Surface Painter's Tape 2080 lists freshly painted walls among its surfaces with an asterisk: at least 24 hours old. The application instruction is to press it onto a clean, dry, dust-free surface and let it set 30 to 60 minutes before painting. Removal is at a 45 degree angle, pulled back on itself, once the paint is dry to the touch, and the tape is rated for 60-day clean removal indoors.

Tape a wall you painted this morning and the tape takes the paint with it in strips. That is a spackle, sand, prime and repaint cycle on a wall that was finished.

Why is there a color line halfway up the wall?

Guessing is what produces the second trip, and the second trip is what produces a visible batch line. Measure first. The bedroom case: 2 x (12 + 14) x 8 = 416 sq ft of wall, minus a 3-by-7 door at 21 sq ft and two 3-by-5 windows at 30 sq ft, which leaves 365 sq ft. Two coats is 730 sq ft.

Coverage is a property of the paint and the surface together, so take it from the can. Sherwin-Williams publishes 350 to 400 sq ft per gallon for Emerald Urethane at 4 mils wet. Dividing 730 by those two rates gives 1.83 to 2.09 gallons, so the honest answer is three gallons, or two gallons plus two quarts. Then box them: pour every can into one bucket and stir, so a color difference between batches disappears instead of landing halfway up a wall.

Run your own room through the paint calculator, which picks the cheapest combination of can sizes rather than rounding up to the next gallon. When a data sheet gives coverage in square meters per liter, as Emerald's does at 8.58 to 9.81, the unit converter gets you back to square feet per gallon.

Is it legal to sand pre-1978 paint in my own house?

EPA's RRP rule requires certification for anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in homes, childcare facilities and preschools built before 1978. It does not apply to homeowners working on their own pre-1978 home, unless they rent part of it, run a childcare facility in it, or buy and flip houses for profit. That exemption is legal and it is not physical. The dust is identical.

Test first. A surface lead test kit is $19.99, and EPA recommends a certified lead inspector or risk assessor for a definitive answer. If lead is present, EPA's own guidance for do-it-yourselfers is specific: remove furniture, cover floors with plastic sheeting, close and seal the doors to the work area, mist surfaces before sanding, scraping, drilling or cutting, keep heat guns under 1,100°F, and vacuum everything with a HEPA vacuum at cleanup.

Note the threshold that exists for paid firms, because it tells you what EPA considers small: six square feet or less of interior painted surface, or 20 square feet or less of exterior, and even that exception is void where the job involves window replacement, demolition of painted surfaces or prohibited work practices. A room being sanded for repaint is far past that line.

Paint is a thin film whose only job is to stay attached. Every dollar spent on what is under it buys back an order of magnitude, and every data sheet already tells you the number to wait for.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most expensive interior painting mistake?

Putting enamel on kitchen cabinets that were never degreased or scuffed. Benjamin Moore's Advance sheet wants cabinetry roughened with 220 grit or coarser before priming, on a surface free of grease, oil, soap and wax. Degreaser and sanding sponges cost $20.48. Stripping 18 doors and 6 drawer fronts and starting over is about 25 hours of hands-on work, $854.25 at the loaded May 2025 median painter wage of $34.17, before any paint.

Do I really have to sand cabinets before painting?

You have to dull them, and degrease them first. Benjamin Moore's Advance data sheet says cabinetry is to be roughened by sanding with 220 grit or coarser before priming, with all dust cleaned. Two bonding primers relax the sanding: Zinsser B-I-N claims excellent adhesion to glossy surfaces without scuff sanding, and Sherwin-Williams Extreme Bond says sanding may not be necessary on most clean surfaces. Neither relaxes the degreasing.

How long should I wait between coats of paint?

Whatever the data sheet says at 77°F and 50% relative humidity, and longer when it is cooler or damp. Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane recoats in 4 hours; Benjamin Moore Advance in 16, though it is dry to the touch in 4 to 6; Zinsser B-I-N in 45 minutes. Recoating early traps solvent under the second coat and leaves a film that marks under a fingernail.

What sheen should I use in a kitchen or bathroom?

Sherwin-Williams recommends semi-gloss in kitchens for easy cleaning and satin or semi-gloss in bathrooms because they withstand moisture, with flat for ceilings and eggshell or satin in bedrooms. Flat and eggshell hide imperfections better, which is the trade.

How much paint do I need for a 12 by 14 room?

About 3 gallons for two coats. Walls are 2 x (12 + 14) x 8 = 416 sq ft, less a 3-by-7 door and two 3-by-5 windows, which is 365 sq ft. Two coats is 730 sq ft. At the 350 to 400 sq ft per gallon that Sherwin-Williams publishes for Emerald Urethane at 4 mils wet, that is 1.83 to 2.09 gallons, so buy 3 gallons or 2 gallons and 2 quarts, and mix them together before you start.

Can I paint over chalky or glossy paint?

Not without preparing it. Zinsser's B-I-N data sheet requires surfaces free of dust, dirt, excessive chalky material, grime, grease, oil and wax, and says not to use TSP as the cleaner. Chalk is a loose powder of degraded binder, so a new coat over it is bonded to powder. Wash, rinse, dry, then prime.

When can I put painter's tape on freshly painted walls?

After 24 hours, and only with a delicate-surface tape. 3M's data sheet for Scotch Delicate Surface Painter's Tape 2080 lists freshly painted walls at least 24 hours old, says to press it onto a clean, dry, dust-free surface, to let it set 30 to 60 minutes before painting, and to pull it back on itself at 45 degrees once the paint is dry to the touch.

Do I need to worry about lead paint in my own house?

If it was built before 1978, test before you sand or scrape. EPA's RRP rule requires certification of anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in pre-1978 homes, childcare facilities and preschools, and does not apply to homeowners working on their own home unless they rent part of it, run a childcare facility there or flip houses. The exemption is legal. The dust is the same either way, and a test kit is $19.99.
