How to insulate an attic yourself, step by step
Topping up a 1,500 sq ft attic from R-19 to R-49 is two days of work for two people: air seal and baffle first, then blow 23 bags of fiberglass until five depth markers read 17 1/8 inches.
To insulate an attic, check for vermiculite and knob and tube wiring, measure the depth already there, air seal the top plates and penetrations, dam the flue and any non-IC light, staple a vent chute in every eave bay, then blow loose fill until both the bag count and the depth on the manufacturer's chart are met.
Time: ENERGY STAR rates air sealing and insulating at 1 to 3 days each for a homeowner, 1 to 2 days each for a contractor. DIY cost: $1,491.74 in materials and safety gear to take 1,500 sq ft from R-19 to R-49, plus the blower rental. Hired: $2,372.25 is the cost floor worked out in the attic insulation cost guide, before contractor overhead and profit. Difficulty: ENERGY STAR calls the air sealing difficult and the insulating moderate to difficult. Do not do it yourself if you find vermiculite, if there is knob and tube wiring, or if bath fans vent into the attic and nobody has fixed that yet.

First, look for vermiculite and other stop signs
Before anything else, look at what is on the attic floor. The EPA describes vermiculite as a pebble-like, pour-in product, usually gray-brown or silver-gold. Most of it came from a mine near Libby, Montana, which supplied over 70% of the vermiculite sold in the United States from 1919 to 1990 and was contaminated with asbestos. The EPA's instruction is blunt: assume it contains asbestos, do not disturb it, do not store things in that attic, and do not try to remove it yourself. If the job would disturb it, the EPA says to hire a professional asbestos contractor. Blowing new insulation over it, stepping through it to set baffles and sealing the top plates under it all disturb it.
ENERGY STAR adds a second stop sign: knob and tube wiring, installed before about 1930, which can be a fire hazard in contact with insulation. An electrician has to deal with it first. The third is a bath or kitchen fan that ends in the attic. Section M1501.1 of the 2021 IRC says exhaust air shall not be discharged into an attic, and a fan that dumps moist air into new insulation soaks it. Duct those fans outdoors before you insulate.
How much insulation is already in your attic?
Measure it and read the depth on the manufacturer's chart; the R-value on the label is not what the ceiling delivers. Take the depth in several places away from the eaves, where the roof pinches the insulation down, and identify the material. Loose fiberglass is fluffy and white, yellow or pink. Cellulose is gray shredded paper. The manufacturer's chart converts depth to R-value: on the Knauf EcoFill Wx card, R-19 of blown fiberglass is 6 3/4 inches.
The label number is not what the ceiling delivers, because the joists carry heat past the insulation. Run through the math module behind the insulation R-value calculator, R-19 between 2x6 joists at 24 inches, with drywall, the inside air film and a vented attic, performs at R-17.75. The joists cost 13.7% of the nominal value. Blowing R-30 over the top buries them, and the same ceiling performs at R-48.86, with the framing loss down to 3.4%. That is one more reason to go over the joists instead of stopping at their tops.
Measure the depth in your own attic, pick the material and read the R it delivers. This frame does one layer; the full calculator stacks drywall, the air films and the joists, which is where the 13.7% framing loss above comes from.
Attic insulation materials list, with quantities and prices
The case: 1,500 sq ft, R-19 existing, adding R-30. The Knauf chart asks for 15.3 bags per 1,000 sq ft at R-30, which is 22.95 bags; buy 23. Two 50 ft eaves with trusses at 24 inches have 25 bays each; with one spare a side, that is 52 vent chutes. The IECC wants one depth marker per 300 sq ft, which is five.

The foam counts are the same assumption as in the cost guide. The respirator is my choice over the dust mask ENERGY STAR lists as the minimum; fiberglass dust in a hot attic for a full day is the case for it. Add safety glasses, gloves, a hard hat or cap for the roofing nails, and boards to walk on.
Tools: the blower, and what else you need
The blowing machine is the one tool you rent. Menards lists a Krendl blower on a 4-hour base rental with no price online. The hose matters as much as the machine. Knauf measured its chart with 150 ft of 3 inch hose with internal corrugation, and says to use at least that; a short or smooth hose fluffs the material less, and you reach the depth on the card with fewer bags and less R than it promises.
You also need a work light, a utility knife, a staple gun for the chutes, sheet metal snips, a caulk gun, a tape measure, and a helper at the machine. Two people and a phone call or a hand signal between them make the job go.
How to insulate the attic, step by step

Lay a path. Put boards across the joists from the hatch to the far end and along both eaves. You will be kneeling on them for two days, and a foot through the drywall turns an insulation job into a drywall repair.
It passes when you can reach every eave and every penetration without stepping between joists.

Air seal the top plates and penetrations. Pull back the old insulation where needed and foam the gaps where wires and pipes pass through the top plates, the plumbing vent, and any dropped soffit or chase open to the attic. ENERGY STAR's attic sealing list covers the hatch, wiring and plumbing holes, dropped soffits, recessed lights and the flue chase.
It passes when every hole through the top plates and around pipes, wires and chases is filled and the foam has cured as the can directs.

Dam the flue. Keep insulation and anything combustible 1 inch from a metal flue and 2 inches from a masonry chimney. Close the gap around the flue with aluminum flashing set in high-temperature caulk, and build a metal dam around it so the loose fill cannot drift in.
It passes when a ruler slides between flue and dam all the way around.

Deal with the recessed lights. ENERGY STAR says to keep all insulation at least 3 inches from recessed cans unless they are rated IC, for insulated ceiling. Look for the IC rating on the label inside the fixture. Fence each non-IC can with sheet metal or wire mesh at that clearance.
It passes when every non-IC can has a fence and every fence stands at least 3 inches off the fixture.

Staple a vent chute in every bay at the eaves. The IECC requires a baffle next to soffit vents in a vented attic, extending over the top of the insulation and out to the outer edge of the wall's top plate, and the IRC keeps a 1 inch air space between insulation and roof sheathing at the vents. On a 6/12 roof a 48 inch chute rises about 21.5 inches, above the 17 1/8 inches of finished insulation.
It passes when you can see daylight from the soffit vent up each chute.

Set the depth markers. Fasten five yardsticks to trusses, spread across the floor, facing the hatch. Mark the total finished depth, 6 3/4 inches of old plus 10 3/8 inches of new, 17 1/8 inches, with numbers at least 1 inch high as the IECC requires.
It passes when every marker can be read with a flashlight from the hatch.

Blow the insulation. Start at the far end and the eaves and work back toward the hatch, holding the hose level and letting the material fall into place. Keep the machine settings the rental store gives for the product. Count bags as the helper feeds them.
It passes when all five markers read at least 17 1/8 inches and all 23 bags are empty. Depth alone is not enough; Knauf says both minimums have to be met.

Finish the hatch and fill out the card. Weatherstrip the hatch frame, fasten the R-38 kit or rigid foam to the hatch, and fill in the attic card that comes with the insulation: R-value, number of bags, minimum thickness and area covered. Staple it near the hatch.
It passes when the hatch closes against the weatherstrip on all four sides and the card matches what you did.
Batts instead of blown-in insulation
Batts make sense in a small attic or one you can only work in a few hours at a time. Over existing insulation, ENERGY STAR says to use unfaced batts and lay them across the joists, perpendicular to the first layer, which also covers the joist tops. For the 1,500 sq ft case the cost guide counts 18 packages of R-30 unfaced batts at $104.00, $1,872.00, against $1,118.72 for blown fiberglass. The calculator gives the same R-48.86 for either, since R-30 laid over the joists does the same work whatever it is made of. Cut batts around the same flue dams and fixture fences, and keep them off the soffit chutes.
Attic insulation mistakes that cost money
Blowing 18 bags where the chart wants 23 saves $243.20 at the store. Eighteen bags over 1,500 sq ft is 12 per 1,000, which lands between the chart's R-22 and R-26 rows. At R-22 added, the calculator puts the ceiling at R-40.77 instead of R-48.86, and heat flow through it is 20% higher for as long as you own the house. The fix is renting the blower again and buying the missing bags.
Insulation blown into the eaves without chutes cuts off the intake air ENERGY STAR says never to cover. Chutes cost $2.69 a bay before the job. After it, you are digging 17 inches of fiberglass out of the tightest corner of the attic by hand to set them.
A kraft face laid over old insulation is a vapor retarder in the wrong place. Pulling and replacing 18 packages of batts is $1,872.00 of material bought twice.
Sealing after insulating leaves every skipped gap under 17 inches of loose fill. Doing the air sealing first costs $53.80 in foam; doing it second costs a day of raking insulation back and forth, and it usually does not get done.
Should you insulate the attic yourself or hire it out?
Doing it yourself saves at least $1,059.85 of labor on this attic, before any contractor markup. Insulation workers for floors, ceilings and walls earned a national mean of $26.32 an hour in May 2025. Loaded at the BLS ratio of 1.438 for private construction, that is $37.85 an hour. The cost guide puts this job at 12 labor-hours of blowing, from Knauf's claim of 1,000 sq ft of R-30 in under 4 hours, plus 16 labor-hours of air sealing, an assumption stated there. That is $1,059.85 of labor at cost, and the contractor's overhead and profit come on top.
ENERGY STAR's DIY estimates, 1 to 3 days for air sealing and 1 to 3 days for insulating, add up to 2 to 6 days. For two people working 8-hour days, which is my assumption, that is 32 to 96 hours, and the labor you save is worth $33.12 down to $11.04 an hour. Read that against the contractor's markup as well: the saving is at least $1,059.85, and any bid above the $2,372.25 cost floor raises it.
Do it yourself when the attic is walkable, dry and free of vermiculite, and you can give it two clear days. Hire when the attic is shallow or crowded with ductwork, when there are more than a few recessed cans to fence, or when a utility rebate requires a participating contractor and a blower door test, which the cost guide covers. Then check the bid: product, R-value, bag count, chutes by bay, and air sealing as its own line.
Frequently asked questions
Can you put new insulation over old insulation in the attic?
Usually, yes, if the old material is dry, not vermiculite, and you air seal first. Blown fiberglass or cellulose goes straight on top. If you use batts, ENERGY STAR says the second layer should be unfaced, with no vapor retarder, and laid across the joists. A kraft or foil face on top of old insulation sits on the cold side, where it can trap moisture between the layers.
Do I need to remove old attic insulation before installing new?
Not as a rule. Remove it when it is wet, moldy, contaminated by animals, or blocking the air sealing you need to do. Leave it alone when it is vermiculite: the EPA says to assume vermiculite contains asbestos, not to disturb it, and never to remove it yourself; hire a professional asbestos contractor if the work would disturb it. Old dry fiberglass or cellulose still counts toward the total R-value, which is the point of measuring it first.
How do you insulate the attic hatch or access door?
Weatherstrip the frame so the hatch seals when closed, then insulate its top. The 2021 IECC, section R402.2.4, asks for access hatches to be insulated to the same R-value as the ceiling around them. A ready-made R-38 hatch kit costs $64.99 at Menards, which is short of an R-49 ceiling, so a layer of rigid foam or an unfaced batt fastened to the hatch closes more of the gap. The IRC sets the rough opening at no less than 22 by 30 inches.
Should you air seal the attic before insulating?
Yes, always first. Loose fill and batts slow conducted heat but let air through, and once 17 inches of insulation cover the top plates, every gap you skipped stays buried. Sealing first costs $53.80 in foam on the 1,500 sq ft attic in this guide. Sealing afterward costs a day of raking insulation back and forth, and it usually does not get done.
How long does it take to insulate an attic?
ENERGY STAR estimates 1 to 3 days for a homeowner to air seal an attic and another 1 to 3 days to insulate it, or 1 to 2 days each for a contractor. For two people working 8-hour days that is 32 to 96 hours in all. The blowing itself is the fast part; the sealing, the flue dam, the fixture fences and the vent chutes take most of the time.
How deep should blown-in insulation be?
Read the chart on the bag you buy; depth and bag count differ by product. On the Knauf EcoFill Wx chart, R-30 needs at least 10 3/8 inches, R-38 13 inches, R-49 16 3/8 inches and R-60 19 3/4 inches, with 15.3, 19.9, 26.3 and 33.3 bags per 1,000 sq ft. Both minimums have to be met. The IECC wants depth markers, one per 300 sq ft, facing the access opening.
Blown-in insulation vs batts: which is better for a DIY attic?
Loose fill for most attics. It fills around wiring, bracing and odd joist spacing without the gaps batts leave, and for the 1,500 sq ft case in the cost guide, 23 bags of blown fiberglass cost $1,118.72 against $1,872.00 for 18 packages of R-30 unfaced batts. Batts win in a small attic where the blower rental is not worth the trip, or when you can only work in short sessions. Either way, the performance comes out the same: the calculator gives R-48.86 for R-30 of either over the R-19 here.
Can you rent an insulation blowing machine?
Yes. Menards lists a Krendl insulation blower on a 4-hour base rental, with no price online, so call the store. Check the hose before you leave.
